Adoption Saga Recap {Week 4}
Book em Danno.
Well actually, we weren't booked, we were just printed.
Aside from having a hard time finding the office, it was all very smooth. They do everything digitally now, so we didn't even have to deal with the black dust.
We've had several people tell us that now we're "on the grid" so we shouldn't commit any crimes now.
We did find out that my niece Liz has an amazing fingerprint. It's really distinct according to the printer. (Printer? Is that what you call the person doing the prints?)
Other than that, not much has changed. We should hear from our case worker about the 14 hour training in the next few weeks.
We specifically need you guys to pray that we'll get clear direction
about building vs. buying. We'd LOVE to build a house, but it has to be the right situation. What we decide to do will affect the timeline with all of this and of course, we want to do the right thing.
Please continue to keep us and our future children in your prayers. We really appreciate it!

Party's Here! {To be said like Snooki}
I'll preface this post by saying that I don't watch Jersey Shore, but the title seemed appropriate. This title's for you Julie...my Waste of Brain Cells Jersey Shore loving friend.
We had our annual Christmas party on Friday night. It was so much fun!
I love that each year gets better and better.
Julie came over to be my assistant in the kitchen and Chase was home this year too, so we made quite the team. You know I love my lists, so I had made a schedule of what needed to be prepped / cooked and when it needed to happen. We followed it and the whole day went flawlessly.
We answered each other by saying "Yes Chef!" like they do on those cooking competition shows. Chase would occasionally bark orders at us just so it felt real.

There was also a moment where Chase crushed some peppermints with a hammer to the beat of "I Like Big Butts" which was playing in the background. (Yes we were listening to 90's music! I love the 90's channel on Dish!)
Anyway, I wanted to share the party menu in case anyone is looking for last minute ideas for your parties this weekend.
Pepperoni & Cheeses Tray
Pigs in a Blanket
Chips & Dip
Veggie Tree
The moral of this menu story is that Kraft Recipes and Pillsbury definitely saved the day. They're easy and quick. What more needs to be said?

We covered the counter with white Christmas lights and Chase made 'levels' with various boxes we had laying around. We covered the whole thing with light green satin fabric. It looked so good with the lights on!
I have some notes to share on the tree construction.
But first, here she is in all her glory:
But first, here she is in all her glory:
We used packing tape (because it's all we had on hand) to secure the cone to the cake stand. We tried the hot glue, but it didn't stick.
We didn't cut our cone down, so it was pretty tall. We also covered the entire cone with broccoli because our tree was in the middle of the food display.
This was honestly a very easy project and I'll definitely do it again. Our only mess up was not getting enough broccoli the first time around. We had to send Chase out on an emergency broccoli mission. (We used 8 heads total.)
Just make sure when you're picking out the broccoli heads that you look to see if the stalks are long or if they split into smaller stalks. (Stalks? Is that the right word? Don't judge me if it's not, ok?) You definitely want long stalks so that the toothpicks will be able to stick in it far enough and you'll have enough left over to stick into the cone.
The hardest part was definitely convincing people that it was made to be eaten.
Let me know if you have any questions about any of the recipes. I got good reviews from the crowd, so any of these would work great for your family gatherings this weekend!

Adoption Saga Recap {Week 3}
Cross one off the list! Orientation = Check.
This past week was filled with lots of information and to do lists.
(And you know I'm a happy girl about lists!)
We had orientation at the regional office this week. We received a lot of forms to fill out and a lot of information about things that had to happen before we were on THE list. THE list is the one and only list that's separating us from being chosen for children. THE list probably won't come into play until the summer. We've accepted this fact and we're ok with it. We have a lot of things to accomplish before then, so it helps.
Orientation was great. We were in the room with at least 15 other couples. We actually ended up sitting with a couple we knew from our town! (That was crazy to us for some reason even though it's only an hour away from where we live.)
The only issue that we ran into (which really isn't an issue) is the fact that we don't have an open bedroom at the moment for any children to be place with us. My niece is living with us until she gets married in September. We stayed after and asked our case worker (who also led the class) what this would mean for us. She said that they could not consider us for placement until we had a bedroom available. So basically we wouldn't be on THE list until the room was free. BUT she confirmed our suspicion that realistically speaking, we probably wouldn't be done with all of our paperwork and ready for THE list until around that time anyway.
We also discussed what would happen if we moved in the middle of our homestudy. (We have been tossing around the idea of buying a house since the market is definitely in our favor as buyers.) She told us that since the Fire & DHEC inspections are obviously based on the house we'll be in when the children are placed, we would probably want to postpone those until we're sure of what we're going to do. Good to know.
Overall, it was very informative and we are very glad that we've gotten it out of the way. She was able to answer questions that we hadn't even thought to ask yet. She was also very honest and up front about time frames. That definitely helps me because as my husband says, I'm a by the book kind of gal. If you say it'll be 3 weeks, I expect it to be 3 weeks. I set my heart on it and resign myself to waiting for 3 weeks. If it doesn't happen in 3 weeks, we have a problem. I am very aware of this and I believe that God has us in this situation to help me with my little time frame problem.
So, for the sake of giving me something to look back on when I start to freak out about how slow it's moving, here's the time frames we were given. (I know I know, I shouldn't do this...)
DSS Time Frames
(Pulled from Ashley's brain based off of caseworker's comments and should not be taken as the gospel.)
1 month - wait for phone call to schedule 14 hour training (she said it wouldn't be until January)
1 month - wait for 14 hour training after it's scheduled
1 month - wait for investigator to be assigned to do homestudy
3 months - homestudy process
1 month - Fire & DHEC inspections to be scheduled (they only do them once a month)
1 month - Fire & DHEC inspections
1 month - Final approval to be on THE list
So, if you do the math, that puts us right at September. Which works out perfectly if we stay where we are. And even if we move, it'll be nice to have a little time to settle before adding little ones to our home. Either way, it's not that far away if you really think about it. It's pretty much a pregnancy without the cravings, hot flashes, and uglybattle scars stretch marks.
Please continue to keep us and our future children in your prayers. We really appreciate it!

Adoption Saga Recap {Week 2}
I really don't have anything new to report this week.
We're excited about getting started with Orientation this comnig Monday. It makes us feel like we're at least moving forward. At this point, our philosophy is that any movement is better than no movement and from what I've read from other adoptive families, that's going to be our philosophy through the whole process.
Knowing the risk that is inevitably involved, I still struggle pretty much daily with fear trying to creep in. I just have to continue to put that worry in God's hands and trust that He has it all under control. He is faithful.
Please continue to keep us and our future children in your prayers. We really appreciate it!

Adoption Saga Recap {Week 1}
I guess I should start out by filling you in on the direction we've decided to head in what I lovingly refer to as the Adoption Saga.
When trying to decide which path God wanted us to take, we looked into all the options. International Adoption. Domestic Adoption. Private Adoption (finding a birth mother to allow us to adopt). We said yes to International Adoption and Private Adoption, although both options are really expensive. But in true Chase & Ashley form, when it came to Domestic Adoption, we said the one word that will almost always backfire on us: "No".
Our reasoning for saying no is that we've heard the horror stories of families taking in a child and falling in love with them, only to have them sent back to the crackhead birth parents. We also began to evaluate our financial situation and it became clear to us that even though we feel led to do it, it doesn't mean it has to be now. We believe that God will provide for us when the time comes to get a child from another country. So it's not out of our life forever, it's just not in our life right now.
Through a series of events and people in our lives, God showed us that we needed to take a closer look at Domestic Adoption through the state (DSS). We were pleasantly surprised to find out that the process to adopt through DSS is not very intense like we thought. Once you're finished with the process, you just wait.
Since waiting is invovled in any of the paths we would have chosen, we're not too worried about it. While we know that there is a risk invovled with fostering to adopt, we know that our God is in control. We just have to choose to put that in His hands every day and not worry about it.
I'm going to start recapping each week so that we can look back on the process and see how God has moved us through each step of this journey. I know some weeks there won't be much to report and other weeks we'll be SCREAMING IN ALL CAPS about something that God has done. Either way, you'll know about it.
As for this week...
I made the call on Wednesday to get the process started. I spoke with a very helpful woman who led me through each of the intake questions. I opted to have the application sent to me by email instead of snail mail - because let's face it...email is much faster and much easier on everybody. She told me that if I hadn't recieved it in a day or two I should call and check on it.
I hadn't recieved it by this morning so I called them again. In talking with a friend who has been through this same process recently, the only advice she gave me was to stay on top of my case. She explained that they are very busy people and that the more you call and check, the faster things go. Not that I'd do this to pester them, but just to make sure things are getting done. She had her paperwork lost twice and had luckily made copies of everything the second time so that she could resubmit it quickly.
When I called, they were very helpful but informed me that my information had been lost. I answered all the intake questions again (which were only about 10 so it took just a few minutes). She said not to expect anything before next week but to call by Friday if I hadn't recieved anything.
I received an email from them this afternoon with all the information and with the application. I was able to fill it out and scan & save it just in case it was lost.
I also scheduled our orientation class that will take place on the 12th of this month. Once we're through with that, there are some big steps that we'll take. But for now, I'm happy to have the preliminary steps out of the way. Below you'll find the list taken directly from the SC DSS website. I get excited just reading through it and seeing that it's really not that many steps.
